Led and developed by public space researcher Cara Chellew, Mapping DefensiveTO is the first of its kind to systematically map defensive urban design in Toronto’s public parks, squares, and privately owned, publicly accessible spaces (POPS).
The goal of the project is to gather data on the extent and pervasiveness of defensive urban design in Toronto while inviting community members to rethink how their public spaces are designed, and for whom.
Volunteers will be split into groups and assigned locations to visit June 22-23 and June 29. We will be going out in groups on Saturday June 22 and Sunday June 23 for 3 hours (12pm-3pm) to public spaces around Toronto including Downtown, Midtown, North York, and Etobicoke. The following Saturday, we will visit public spaces in Scarborough on June 29 from (12pm-3pm).
You are welcome to join us as much or as little as you like- you can come out for one day or all three! Just be sure to enter your availability in the volunteer form here: https://forms.gle/oxFvRYWqXaxu3T2z5 Participants are also invited to attend a project orientation session on June 18, 2019 at CSI Spadina from 6pm-7:30pm. The meeting will provide an overview of the project and how to identify various forms of defensive/hostile architecture.
